Tokyo beyond crowds
Tokyo is bigger than you might think, and it's not just the Tokyo we all know and expect. There are many day trips you can take from Tokyo. So, if Tokyo is the base for your trip, this blog will tell you about several day trips from Tokyo to discover a different side of Japan without having to travel too far from the capital. Let's start with Kamakura.
Did you know that just under an hour's drive from Tokyo, you can enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the seaside with its outstretched golden beaches?! If you're looking for the perfect day trip from Tokyo, Kamakura is the perfect destination, offering a mix of ancient temples, bustling shopping streets, hidden coffee shops, and picture-perfect coastal views. Whether you're short on time or want a slice of Japan not too far from the capital, Kamakura is the perfect addition to your itinerary.
HOW TO GET TO KAMAKURA FROM TOKYO
The journey is straightforward, making Kamakura one of the easiest and most enjoyable day trips from Tokyo. Regardless of which Tokyo station you depart from, reaching Kamakura is easy and takes about an hour. My advice, however, is to avoid getting off at Kita-Kamakura Station and instead get off at the next station. Once you step outside the train station, you'll no longer feel like you're in Tokyo, but rather like you've stepped into one of your favorite Japanese anime. The first thing that struck me in Kamakura was its coastal landscape and the sun reflecting on the ocean. Even though I visited in the dead of winter, it feels like it's always summer here, with its laid-back atmosphere, surfers riding its waves, and motorcycle riders lining its streets.
SHICHIRIGAHAMA BEACH
While Kamakura has so much to offer, the main reason for my visit was to spend a day at the beach, so my first stop was Shichirigahama Beach. Located along the scenic coastline west of Kamakura, this beach is famous for its panoramic ocean views and relaxed atmosphere. And on a clear day, and you're lucky, you can spot Mount Fuji rising above the horizon, as if this place weren't already beautiful enough.
The beach is even more stunning at sunset, but if you want to fill your lungs and eyes, don't miss the opportunity to spend a few hours along its beaches, whether relaxing, snapping some beautiful photos, or even just getting lost in its alleys and discovering glimpses of daily life, or watching the nostalgic train pass by.
TIP: If you want to capture the perfect shot of the train crossing the tracks against the ocean backdrop, head to Pacific Drive-In.
Just watch out for the hawks that make this beach their home. While we have seagulls in Italy, here it's full of hawks that have no problem attacking humans for stealing their food. Unfortunately, I speak from experience...
KOMACHI STREET
Leave the laid-back atmosphere of the beach and head to Komachi Street, a lively pedestrian street full of shops, cafes, and food stalls. You can find everything here, and it's a great opportunity to soak up the Kamakura atmosphere, savor some local delicacies, or buy some souvenirs. Arrive early to try to avoid the crowds.
VISIT TSURUGAOKA HACHIMANGU SHRINE
At the end of Komachi Street lies Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura's most important Shinto shrine. The shrine is very impressive, with large torii gates, wide paths and steps, ponds, plants, and flowers creating a peaceful atmosphere. And of course, I can't fail to mention the street food on offer. Many temples and shrines have dedicated spaces for stalls offering a variety of street food, from yakisoba to skewered meat and much more. During the rest of the year, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu hosts various festivals and events, making every visit a unique experience.
IS WORTH VISITING KAMAKURA?
Absolutely. Kamakura offers an experience that feels completely different from Tokyo despite being only a short train ride away. In a single day, you can explore centuries-old shrines, taste local street food, wander charming neighborhoods, and watch the sunset by the sea.
For travelers looking to experience a quieter and more traditional side of Japan without venturing far from the capital, Kamakura is one of the best day trips from Tokyo. If you're planning your Japan itinerary, make sure to set aside a day for Kamakura—you'll discover why it remains one of the country's most beloved destinations.
